THE-OLOGIES is a home for queer reflection on a myriad of issues. As a gay working-class post-Christian Latino with extensive academic training in religion and popular music, I am interested in feminist, anti-homophobic, socio-economic, and racial analyses of faiths and grooves. THE-OLOGIES is an open journal of every day struggles and on-going revolutions, soul food for the oppressed, medicine for the oppressor.
on how to resurrect and other pains
only i own
pivot and balance
my bones sweat
and my skin is set aflame
there’s a pounding
not man enough?!
my slightly jaundiced flush
kissing the collar bone
as sheer as this frame
be not long to judge; for
i long to grow dark and strong
like the forgotten gods of my fallen mothers
Inle & Abbata, oh deep waves
hammer my pecs into jade
chisel the smoke and the buzz
my shoulders skillfully crafted geodes sanded by the hard—
Xochitl—ecstasy like a raining sun
flowers precipitate to haste,
but they bloom bright just the same…
Not man enough!
these five dollars remind
in the dark the only is this body
my body; the flake, the scrag, the asymmetrical, the un-proportion
all strength unseen
none. u refuse to see
and now i fall into the sea
my folding knees hit the marble
i suck on your iron death
sink diamonds into my neck, no longer shall you confuse it for hers
liquid onyx, perhaps
gods always come twice, at least.
rip me to shreds
never again will you hear me cry
men don’t cry
tears congeal in my body
twisting like burning white gold
that night you will feel divinity
sea of blankets
hear your aging fire and
i will wait for the sun, which cools all pain
other fires beckon your name, like canyons echoing canyons
but mine is lined with designs of onyx and jade untold
besides, i am no more. just me. none to behold
gods don’t live fairy tales;
we cast our own bodies
Unfortunately, it’s easier to have sympathy with suffering than to have sympathy with thought. And so, the worst slave owners are the ones who are kind to their slaves.
Left in Thought, Right in Act?
Liberals don’t like people who are ready to sacrifice themselves. For liberals, if you are too radical, then you’re just a step from totalitarianism. But aren’t there virtues worth the terror? If class-consciousness, gender-consciousness, and race-consciousness are thoroughly Western constructs, then I see no better reason for hegemonic domination than that. I am so far to the Left that it seems like I am brushing against the fundamentalists of the Right!
Ontological reality: Humans are created equal.
Social reality: Humans are created unequal.
Here’s the task: Build a philosophy grounded in the first proposition and motivated by the second proposition, while at the same time being grounded in the second proposition and motivated by the first.
Every Economy Carries Psychology
Market capitalism rewards psychopathy.
"You don’t have the money or collateral? Well, fuck you."
Corporate capitalism rewards psychopathy.
"You don’t have stock or the credit? Well, fuck you."
State capitalism rewards psychopathy.
"You don’t have national interest? Well, fuck you."
In short, glibness, pride, deceit, manipulation, hedonism, callousness, irresponsibility, parasitic relations, inability to think long-term, impulsivity, lack of self-control, boredom, and excessive stimulation are all characteristics encouraged, practiced, and rewarded in capitalism.
…and I don’t know what to do about it or how to go about it.
If universities do not produce commodities for sale and society does not put a premium on education, then where does the funding come from if not from private investment, government endowment, and student tuition? The first form of income erodes the insulated freedom of the university as an independent institution by de facto choosing curricula and facilities, while the second one frustrates critical analysis by considering socially and politically subversive academic output and mentorship (CRT, FT, QT, MT, PCT, PT) “un-scholarly” and “too biased”. Then, the third form sucks most intellectual potential out of alumni by subjecting their most youthful years to debt repayment.
